Kiley

“I can’t believe we got it all done,” I say, glancing around at the now-sparkling kitchen counters.

“I told you—two sets of hands make for light work,” Justin says smugly, prepping another pastry box for the last batch of cupcakes in the oven. “Besides, that was pretty fun, right?”

I chuckle. “Sure. More fun than my usual Thursday nights.”

“And what do those consist of?”

“Oh, grading homework or doing lesson plans with a salad in front of the TV. Sometimes with a glass of wine, if I’m feeling kicky.”

“No Mr. Kiley Dolan hanging around?”

I shake my head, glancing away. My cheeks are suddenly hot. “No. I’m what my sister likes to call a ‘spinster.’”

He scoffs. “Yeah, right. You’re even more gorgeous than I remember.”

My cheeks flush hotter. “Um…thank you. But no, I don’t really date. It seems like too much work to get to know someone new. Figure out what they’re hiding, the ways in which they’re broken.”

Justin cocks an eyebrow at me. “That’s…bleak.”

“It’s the truth.” I lean against the counter. “What about you? No Mrs. Buzz ‘N’ Brew hanging around?”

“My brothers Ben and Tanner, sure. Me? No. I guess…I guess I’m a little like you. I guard my heart, because I’m afraid if I give it to the wrong person, she’ll rip it to shreds and drink the blood.”

“Bleak,” I say drily.

“Takes one to know one. Birds of a feather. Two peas in a pod. The apple doesn’t—”

“I got it,” I interrupt with a laugh.

He grins. “Hey, would you grab the broom for me? I want to clean up this flour all over the floor. Since someone who shall remain nameless is one hell of a messy Jessy.”

I retrieve the broom from the corner and carry it over. “Nice one. I seem to recall you upending an entire cup of—whoa!”

With a squeal, I lose my balance as my heeled loafer catches a slick, powdery spot on the tile floor and I trip and topple backward. Just before I hit the floor, strong arms shoot around me, and Justin’s face looms over mine.

“Got you,” he whispers.

“Thanks,” I whisper back.

We hold each other’s gaze, and I realize his lips are only inches from mine.

Ding!

We both jump as the timer goes off. Justin helps me straighten, then pulls out the pan. I busy myself with the sweeping while he gets the cupcakes onto a cooling rack and turns to wash out the pan they were in. Both of us are suddenly very busy.

When the last cupcake is cooled and frosted and nestled carefully into the box, I realize my car is too small for them.

“I only have a little two-door,” I tell Justin. “And I went to the grocery store before I came here, so the backseat is all full too. I would hate to ruin these things.”

“I’ve got plenty of room,” he replies. “How about I just follow you home and help you unload them?”

“That would be great.”

Justin loads the cupcakes into his truck, locks up the store, and follows me to my small house five minutes away.
